Tragedy struck in Ekiti State on Tuesday evening after armed men invaded an open-air crusade at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Eda Oniyo Ekiti, in Ilejemeje Local Government Area, killing the pastor and abducting several worshippers.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the outskirts of the church service in large numbers, opening fire and causing panic among worshippers before whisking away victims into a nearby forest. The exact number of those abducted is yet to be confirmed, as community members and security operatives continue to account for attendees.
“The attackers came heavily armed. They shot the pastor and took some worshippers away. Everyone is still trying to confirm who is missing,” a resident said, describing the community as gripped with fear and confusion.

A government source confirmed the incident, adding that security agencies had already launched a coordinated rescue operation. According to the source, operatives from the police, military, local security outfits, and vigilante groups have been deployed to track the attackers and rescue the victims.
The Ekiti State Police Command also confirmed the attack, saying it had commenced an investigation and intensified a manhunt for those responsible. The Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, said the Commissioner of Police had ordered a full-scale operation involving all security formations in the state.
Authorities urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, while also advising religious organisations to notify security agencies ahead of late or outdoor gatherings to prevent similar incidents.
The attack has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in parts of the South-West, coming months after a similar assault on a church in Kwara State where worshippers were also kidnapped and casualties recorded.
Security operations are ongoing as authorities work to secure the release of the abducted worshippers and apprehend the perpetrators.
