#Cable Theft Plunges Presidential Villa and Parts of Abuja into Darkness

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that the Presidential Villa and several areas in Abuja have been thrown into darkness following the theft of critical electricity cables.

In a statement on Friday, TCN revealed that vandals targeted a 132kV underground cable, which supplies bulk electricity to the Central Area transmission substation. The substation distributes power to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) through eight feeders.

The vandalism occurred near Millennium Park, just a few kilometers from the Presidential Villa. The culprits reportedly stole 40 meters of 1x500mm² XLPE conductors from two transmission lines, severely disrupting power supply.

Affected Areas

The power outage has impacted several key locations in Abuja, including:

  • Maitama
  • Wuse
  • Jabi
  • Lifecamp
  • Asokoro
  • Utako
  • Mabushi
  • Parts of the Presidential Villa

Restoration Efforts

Ndidi Mba, TCN’s General Manager, stated that engineers have been mobilized to the site to repair the damaged cables and restore power to the affected areas as quickly as possible.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, also expressed concern over the rising cases of cable theft, which undermine efforts to ensure stable electricity supply across the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.

This incident highlights the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect critical power infrastructure from vandalism.
