The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to create and spread false information ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The commission said the growing use of AI-generated content and disinformation could undermine public confidence and threaten the credibility of the 2027 polls.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, also disclosed that the commission is carrying out a comprehensive audit of its electoral technology systems as part of preparations for the election.

He further revealed that INEC is considering conducting a mock presidential election to test its systems and ensure they are fully prepared for the 2027 elections.

Amupitan made this known on Wednesday in Abuja in a keynote address delivered on his behalf by INEC National Commissioner, Sani Adam, SAN.

The address was presented at the 13th Annual International Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria.

The conference was held under the theme, “Media, Technology and Elections in Africa: Navigating Digital Disruption and the New Dynamics of Electoral Communication.”

INEC stressed the need for greater awareness and responsible use of technology, particularly on social media, as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.

The commission urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it and avoid content capable of misleading voters or creating unnecessary tension during the electoral process.
