France head coach Didier Deschamps has revealed that he decided to end his 14-year tenure because the environment surrounding the national team had become increasingly difficult, following France’s 6-4 defeat to England at the FIFA World Cup.
Deschamps had previously announced that he would step down after the tournament when his contract expires, bringing an end to one of the most successful managerial spells in French football history.
Explaining his decision, the veteran coach said leaving was in the best interest of the national team rather than for personal reasons, adding that the atmosphere around him had become too overwhelming and that the French team deserved a healthier environment.
Throughout his time in charge, Deschamps was often criticised for prioritising defensive organisation, discipline and efficiency over an attacking style of play, despite having a squad filled with world-class talent.
He also noted that the situation around the team had improved since his departure was made public.
Appointed as France’s head coach in 2012, Deschamps guided Les Bleus to their second FIFA World Cup title in 2018, adding to the country’s first triumph in 1998, when he captained the team to victory on home soil.
