The Federal Government has announced the launch of two joint postgraduate programmes by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. The programmes, which will be delivered in Lagos, cover Artificial Intelligence and Data Technologies, as well as Digital Media and Communications. Classes are scheduled to begin in September 2027, giving Nigerian students access to internationally developed postgraduate education without having to travel abroad.

Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, announced the development, describing the partnership as part of efforts to improve the quality of tertiary education and expand opportunities for Nigerian students. The initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s education reform agenda and the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, particularly its focus on education quality assurance.

The one-year Master of Science programme in Artificial Intelligence and Data Technologies will cover areas including machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, large language models, data management and AI ethics. It is designed to develop students’ programming, data analysis and problem-solving skills, preparing graduates for opportunities in fields such as fintech, healthcare innovation, business analytics and intelligent systems.

The Master of Arts programme in Digital Media and Communications will focus on digital cultures, communication research, content creation, broadcasting and contemporary media practices. It is intended to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills needed for careers in journalism and the wider communications industry. UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, said the collaboration would support curriculum development, experiential learning, research and the internationalisation of Nigerian higher education.

The two universities signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 29 January 2026, laying the foundation for the partnership under Nigeria’s transnational education programme. The initiative was developed with support from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission through a unit based in Lagos. The partners have also outlined plans to introduce undergraduate degree programmes in employment-relevant fields, potentially widening access to international academic opportunities for Nigerian students.
