The Federal Government has officially scrapped the Junior and Senior Secondary School (JSS & SSS) system, introducing a new 12-year basic education structure in its place.
This shift marks the end of the 6-3-3-4 system and the adoption of a 12-4 model, as announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the 2025 National Council on Education (NCE) meeting in Abuja.
Key Highlights of the Reform:
- Seamless 12-Year Education: Students will now receive uninterrupted basic education up to age 16, aligning with global best practices.
- Lower Dropout Rates: The government aims to eliminate financial and systemic barriers that force students to drop out early.
- Vocational & Entrepreneurial Training: The new model integrates practical skill acquisition to better prepare students for higher education or direct entry into the workforce.
- Global Competitiveness: The reform is designed to align Nigeria’s education system with international standards, fostering better learning outcomes.
- Social & Economic Benefits: Reducing child labor and youth involvement in social vices while empowering young Nigerians for national development.
Implementation Strategies:
To ensure the successful roll-out of this education transformation, the government will focus on:

✔ Teacher training and recruitment
✔ Increased funding

The National Council on Education (NCE), comprising state education commissioners, federal agencies, and development partners, will oversee the implementation of the new system across the country.
