#FG Replaces JSS and SSS with 12-Year Basic Education Model

The Federal Government has officially scrapped the Junior and Senior Secondary School (JSS & SSS) system, introducing a new 12-year basic education structure in its place.

This shift marks the end of the 6-3-3-4 system and the adoption of a 12-4 model, as announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the 2025 National Council on Education (NCE) meeting in Abuja.

Key Highlights of the Reform:

  • Seamless 12-Year Education: Students will now receive uninterrupted basic education up to age 16, aligning with global best practices.
  • Lower Dropout Rates: The government aims to eliminate financial and systemic barriers that force students to drop out early.
  • Vocational & Entrepreneurial Training: The new model integrates practical skill acquisition to better prepare students for higher education or direct entry into the workforce.
  • Global Competitiveness: The reform is designed to align Nigeria’s education system with international standards, fostering better learning outcomes.
  • Social & Economic Benefits: Reducing child labor and youth involvement in social vices while empowering young Nigerians for national development.

Implementation Strategies:

To ensure the successful roll-out of this education transformation, the government will focus on:
Policy reforms
Infrastructure expansion
Teacher training and recruitment
Increased funding
Curriculum enhancement

The National Council on Education (NCE), comprising state education commissioners, federal agencies, and development partners, will oversee the implementation of the new system across the country.
