FULL LIST: UNIVERSITY COURSES THAT GENERATE HIGHEST LIFETIME EARNINGS FOR GRADUATES

A new study has revealed that while obtaining a university degree generally boosts lifetime earnings, the financial rewards differ significantly depending on the course of study.

According to research based on data from the Department for Education (DfE), graduates earn an average of £100,000 more over their lifetime than people without a university degree, even after accounting for taxes and student loan repayments.

The findings also show that some degree programmes deliver far greater financial returns than others. Medicine topped the list with an estimated lifetime return of £408,000, followed closely by Economics at £394,000. Other high-performing courses include Medical Sciences (£182,000), Law (£177,000), Business (£174,000), Nursing (£142,000), Mathematics (£133,000), Computing (£128,000), Pharmacology (£126,000), and Engineering (£103,000).

Courses such as Politics, Allied Health, Architecture, Chemistry, Social Care, Education, History, Physics, Technology, Sociology, Psychology, General Sciences, Biosciences, Media, Geography, Agriculture and English also recorded positive lifetime financial returns, although at varying levels.

However, the study found that some subjects provide little or even negative financial returns when compared with the earnings of similar individuals who did not attend university. These include Languages (-£6,000), Philosophy (-£9,000), Creative Arts (-£40,000) and Performing Arts (-£43,000).

Commenting on the findings, researchers noted that although earning a university degree remains one of the most significant opportunities for personal and career development, it does not guarantee financial success. They also raised concerns about low-quality and franchised university courses, arguing that some programmes fail to provide graduates with value for money or strong career prospects.

The report highlights the importance of prospective students carefully considering both their interests and the long-term employment prospects of their chosen field before making decisions about higher education.
