The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered the revival and strengthening of the Police Mobile Force (MOPOL) as part of renewed efforts to tackle kidnapping, banditry and other serious security threats across the country.
Disu said the specialised police unit is being repositioned to take on high-risk operations, particularly in areas affected by insurgency, banditry and kidnapping.
The IGP explained that MOPOL personnel deployed to the North-East have returned to training as part of efforts to improve their operational capacity and prepare them for modern security challenges.
He described the unit as the fighting arm of the Nigeria Police Force and said its revival would help strengthen the police response to violent criminal activities.
Disu also disclosed that retired MOPOL personnel have been voluntarily returning to training centres to share their experience and knowledge with younger officers.
According to him, banditry and insurgency have become regional challenges, with criminal groups taking advantage of porous borders to operate across different parts of West Africa.
The police chief said the Force is also working to improve the welfare of its personnel through better equipment, accommodation, uniforms, salaries and other support measures.
