MAPPING LAGOS ONE TOILET AT A TIME: TWO NIGERIAN YOUTHS LAND UNLIKELY GLOBAL MISSION

Two young innovators from the University of Ibadan have secured a partnership with the Lagos State Government to develop a real-time digital map that helps residents locate public toilets across the city.

The initiative was sparked after 24-year-old Adetokunbo Ogunnoiki shared a proposal on social media, which quickly drew the attention of Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources. Ogunnoiki, alongside his co-founder Ademola Gbadero, introduced their startup solution called “LooPoint,” designed to improve access to sanitation facilities using geo-mapping technology.

The platform aims to allow users to find nearby public toilets, check their availability, view cleanliness ratings, and get directions—all without necessarily downloading an app. It will also provide government officials with a dashboard to monitor usage trends, hygiene feedback, and maintenance needs.

This development aligns with ongoing government efforts to improve sanitation and eliminate open defecation by encouraging businesses to open their restrooms to the public. Authorities have also deployed over 1,700 public toilets across Lagos to support this initiative.

During a presentation to government officials, the founders demonstrated how a similar system had already been successfully implemented within their university campus, helping students easily locate clean and accessible facilities.

Officials praised the innovation as a practical, tech-driven solution to an everyday urban challenge, highlighting the importance of collaboration between government and young innovators to drive meaningful change.
