#Ogun State Considers Enforcing Death Penalty to Curb Cultism, Ritual Killings, and Kidnapping

The Ogun State Government has announced its intention to begin signing death warrants for convicted criminals sentenced by competent courts, aiming to deter heinous crimes such as cultism, ritual killings, and kidnapping in the state.

The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), disclosed this on Friday during an inspection of inmates and facilities at the Correctional Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta.

Government’s Stand on Crime

Ogungbade expressed concern over the rising incidence of violent crimes in Ogun State, despite efforts by security agencies to curb them. He emphasized the government’s resolve to implement laws fully, including carrying out capital punishment in deserving cases.

“We are taking a firm stance to send a message that Ogun State is not a safe haven for such serious crimes,” Ogungbade stated. “The law prescribes the death penalty for crimes like murder, and we are seriously considering implementing these judgments to serve as a deterrent.”

The Attorney General highlighted that reluctance to enforce the death penalty nationwide, particularly since the advent of democratic governance, has contributed to a perception of impunity. He assured that the Ogun State Government would not shy away from its constitutional responsibilities, with Governor Dapo Abiodun ready to uphold the rule of law.

Systematic Approach to Enforcement

Ogungbade assured the public that any implementation of the death penalty would follow due process. “If someone has gone through a fair trial and exhausted all appeals, we will take the necessary steps to enforce the judgment. However, this will be done systematically and not recklessly,” he added.

While no timeline was given for the signing of death warrants, Ogungbade reiterated that the government is committed to balancing justice with deterrence to reduce crime.

Addressing the Root Causes

The Commissioner attributed the surge in criminal activities to a decline in societal values and the support some families provide to offenders. He noted that, traditionally, families played a key role in exposing criminal behavior, but this cultural norm has eroded.

“Unless we reappraise our value system and return to the African tradition that abhors crime and seeks justice for offenders, these issues will persist,” Ogungbade warned.

Improving Correctional Facilities

Ogungbade’s visit to the correctional center aimed to assess inmate conditions and facility standards. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that correctional institutions function effectively and that inmates are not subjected to inhumane conditions.

The state has also granted amnesty to some death-row inmates, commuting their sentences to life imprisonment or fixed-term sentences, reflecting a balanced approach to justice.

The Attorney General concluded by reiterating the government’s dedication to reducing crime and promoting safety across Ogun State, while ensuring justice is served in accordance with the law.
