#Ogun State Unveils West Africa’s Longest Runway at Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport

The Ogun State Government has announced that the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport boasts the longest runway in West Africa, positioning it as the region’s leading aviation facility.

This declaration was made during a media briefing at the airport, hosted by key officials, including the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya; Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo; Airport Manager, Captain Dapo Olumide; and Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade.

State-of-the-Art Facilities and Design

Engr. Akinsanya highlighted the airport’s 4 km-long and 60 m-wide runway, capable of accommodating wide-bodied aircraft such as Boeing 777s and Airbus A350s. The runway, which equates to the width of 17 lanes of road infrastructure, is the longest and largest in Nigeria and West Africa.

He explained that the airport spans 5,000 hectares, with 900 hectares developed in its first phase. The remaining space is part of a master plan to establish an aerotropolis, including hotels, amusement parks, and cinemas.

“We are ready to go commercial once we receive approval from the NCAA [Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority]. Currently, we have approval for chartered flights. The runway, fire station, and other essential infrastructure are complete, and the airport is set to upgrade to class seven with the addition of a third fire tender,” Akinsanya stated.

Legacy and Strategic Importance

Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, described the airport as a “legacy project” of Governor Dapo Abiodun. Situated within a special agricultural processing zone, the facility is expected to catalyze economic growth by enhancing trade and agricultural exports.

First Airport in Nigeria to Attain Operating Permit Status

Captain Olumide emphasized that the Gateway Airport will be the first in Nigeria to operate under the stringent ENCAS 2023 permit. This certification exceeds the traditional Aerodrome Certification standards, ensuring higher operational and safety benchmarks.

“Our commitment to achieving the operating permit status has slightly delayed completion, but it guarantees a world-class facility. This is a significant departure from the Aerodrome Certificate, which many Nigerian airports fail to meet,” Olumide noted.

Vision for the Future

Once operational, the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport is expected to transform Ogun State into a major aviation and logistics hub in West Africa. Its advanced infrastructure and strategic location aim to attract investments, boost exports, and create a vibrant economic ecosystem.
