#Oyomesi Threaten Legal Action Against Governor Seyi Makinde Over Bribery Allegations in Alaafin Selection

The Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers of Oyo, have warned Governor Seyi Makinde of potential legal action following his allegations of bribery during the selection of the new Alaafin. The kingmakers claim the governor’s remarks have tarnished their reputation and demanded evidence to substantiate his accusations.

Background of the Allegations

Governor Makinde recently announced Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin and officially handed him the staff of office on January 13, 2024. During the coronation ceremony, Makinde accused certain individuals of accepting bribes during the selection process and vowed that they would face legal consequences.

“In 2022, when the position of Alaafin became vacant, people approached me, asking that I endorse a candidate for the throne to secure votes in Oyo,” Makinde said. “I told them I would rather uphold the integrity of the process than compromise for political gains. Those who tried to tarnish our traditions will not go unpunished unless they seek forgiveness from Kabiyesi. If Kabiyesi forgives them, I will also pardon them.”

Oyomesi’s Response

The Oyomesi, comprising High Chief Yusuf Akinade, Bashorun of Oyo, and other senior chiefs, expressed their displeasure in a letter to the governor signed by their legal counsel, Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN).

The letter emphasized:

  • The Oyomesi’s respect for the governor’s office and refusal to engage in public disputes despite the alleged defamation.
  • A demand for evidence to support the bribery claims, urging the governor to present such proof in court for proper examination.
  • A reminder to the governor of his accountability after his term in office, warning of potential legal repercussions for defamation.

“We urge the governor to refrain from making unfounded allegations and allow the judiciary to resolve the matter,” the letter read. “The Oyomesi remain committed to their responsibilities as custodians of Oyo’s traditions and expect the governor to respect this heritage.”

Commitment to Tradition and Legal Action

The Oyomesi reiterated their dedication to preserving Oyo’s cultural legacy while asserting their readiness to pursue legal action if necessary. They emphasized that the judiciary should be the platform for resolving such disputes and called on Governor Makinde to exercise restraint and respect their role in Oyo’s traditions.

As tensions mount, the matter may escalate to court, where both parties will have the opportunity to present their cases.
