The Lagos State Government has received additional train sets to boost operations on the Red Line rail corridor, as part of ongoing efforts to improve public transportation in the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the development in a post on X, stating that the new 24-car rolling stock will increase the line’s capacity, improve service frequency, and reduce waiting times for commuters.

According to him, the expansion reflects the government’s continued commitment to building a more efficient and reliable mass transit system for Lagos residents.
The newly delivered coaches are arranged into three train sets and are expected to significantly strengthen the current fleet operating on the Red Line corridor.
The Red Line, which runs along the Agbado–Oyingbo route, currently operates two train sets and began commercial services after its commissioning in February 2024. It passes through key areas such as Ikeja, Mushin, Yaba, and Oshodi.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), which manages the project, plans to increase daily trips on the corridor while targeting a major rise in passenger capacity in the long term.

The 27-kilometre first phase of the project connects major residential and commercial hubs and is designed to integrate with the Blue Line at Marina, forming part of a broader rail network aimed at easing traffic congestion in the city.

Authorities say future extensions of the rail line are expected to improve access to key locations including the National Theatre and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
