#Sanwo-Olu Congratulates Lagos’ First Female Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, Calls Her Emergence Well-Deserved

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, officially welcomed the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, describing her historic emergence as the first female Speaker of the House as both commendable and well-deserving.

The Governor received Speaker Meranda and the new Principal Officers of the Assembly at Lagos House, Ikeja, during a courtesy visit preceding the weekly State Executive Council meeting. Accompanying Governor Sanwo-Olu was his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who joined in reaffirming the commitment to fostering a harmonious working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government.

New Leadership Team

The Principal Officers who joined the Speaker on the visit included:

  • Deputy Speaker: Hon. Mojeed Fatai (Ibeju-Lekki I)
  • Majority Leader: Hon. Temitope Adedeji (Ifako Ijaiye I)
  • Deputy Majority Leader: Hon. Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja II)
  • Chief Whip: Hon. David Setonji (Badagry II)
  • Deputy Chief Whip: Hon. Sanni Babatunde (Kosofe I)

A Historic Achievement

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the election of 44-year-old Meranda, who represents Apapa I Constituency, as a groundbreaking achievement. Her elevation from Deputy Speaker to Speaker follows the impeachment of the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, last week.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu pledged continued collaboration with the legislative arm to ensure the growth and development of Lagos State.

Strengthening Democracy and Cooperation

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of upholding the principle of separation of powers, calling it the bedrock of democracy. He expressed confidence in the Assembly’s support for the administration’s legislative agenda, which aims to deliver impactful programs to the people of Lagos.

He urged Speaker Meranda to be a team player, leveraging her new role to strengthen the relationship between the legislature and executive for the public good. “Your elevation is an opportunity to build on the existing cordial relationship and drive progress for Lagosians,” the Governor remarked.

Promises and Commendations

The Governor praised Assembly members for their unwavering support and promised that his administration would continue to justify their trust. He encouraged Speaker Meranda and her team to expedite the passage of bills critical to advancing the state’s development goals.

This historic leadership transition signals a new chapter in Lagos politics, with Speaker Meranda poised to leave a lasting impact as the House’s first female leader.
