The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has urged lawmakers to recommit to addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, emphasizing the need for national development and comprehensive electoral reforms.
Akpabio made this appeal during a speech welcoming senators back to legislative duties after the Christmas and New Year break.
Call to Action
In his address, titled “Rising to the Greatness of Our Calling,” Akpabio highlighted the critical role of lawmakers in shaping Nigeria’s future.
“As we embark on this new legislative year, I urge us all to include in our New Year resolutions a renewed commitment to the service of our great nation, Nigeria,” he said.
The Senate President stressed the importance of the national budget, describing it as a roadmap for achieving the aspirations of millions of Nigerians. “We must ensure that every item within it reflects the collective dreams of our people and serves as a catalyst for development, equity, and justice,” he noted.
Focus on Electoral Reforms
Akpabio emphasized the urgency of completing electoral reforms before the next election cycle, stating, “Electoral reform is not just a legislative duty; it is a moral imperative.” He underscored the importance of a transparent and credible electoral system for the stability of Nigeria’s democracy.
Prayers for Peace and Unity
Addressing Nigeria’s broader challenges, the Senate President called for collective prayers for peace and unity. He encouraged his colleagues to recognize the transformative power of intercession in guiding national leadership and fostering unity among citizens.
A Vision for Nation-Building
Akpabio concluded by urging lawmakers to embrace their legislative responsibilities as an opportunity to shape Nigeria’s future and leave a lasting legacy.
“Our work here is not just about legislation; it is about shaping the future of a nation and leaving a legacy for generations to come. History is calling on us to make a difference—to write a new narrative for our nation, one of progress, justice, and boundless possibilities,” he stated.
