#Tinubu Approves Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Federal University of Environment and Technology Establishment Bill 2024 into law, officially creating the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Ogoni, in Rivers State.

A statement from the Presidency on X described the move as a fulfillment of Tinubu’s promise to the Ogoni people.

For years, Ogoni indigenes and advocacy groups have pushed for the establishment of this university, citing the region’s severe environmental challenges due to oil spills, water pollution, and land degradation. The bill was introduced in the National Assembly, passed by the Senate in March 2022, but was only recently signed into law.

The new university will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs with a strong focus on environmental technology and research—a crucial step towards addressing the longstanding ecological issues in the Niger Delta.
