President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, to participate in the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission.
The arrival was confirmed by Frederick Nwabufo, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Engagement, in a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter). Tinubu was welcomed at the airport by South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Roland Lamola, and Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
Nwabufo stated:
“President Tinubu in Cape Town, South Africa, for the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission meeting. He was received by South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr. Roland Lamola, alongside Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.”
Focus of the Visit
The visit follows Tinubu’s recent trip to France. According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu departed France on Monday to attend the commission’s meeting in Cape Town.
The Bi-National Commission—scheduled for Tuesday, December 3—is preceded by a ministerial meeting on December 2 at the South African Parliament Building. The commission will explore avenues for enhanced cooperation in areas such as:
- Political consultations
- Migration and visa policies
- Banking and finance
- Defence and security
- Manufacturing and energy
- Trade and investments
This platform is expected to bolster bilateral relations, advance economic growth, and address shared challenges between Nigeria and South Africa.
