President Bola Ahmed Tinubu joined former Nigerian Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan in Ghana to witness the swearing-in ceremony of John Mahama as Ghana’s new president on Tuesday, December 7, 2024.
The event, held in Accra, saw Tinubu engaging warmly with Obasanjo, Jonathan, and other dignitaries. In his remarks, Tinubu congratulated Mahama on his return to power and reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for Ghana, emphasizing the bond between the two nations.
“President John Mahama and I share a deep friendship. My dear brother, I am here to work with you,” Tinubu said. “You can always count on Nigeria’s support and goodwill. We are your brothers and sisters, bound by a strong and unbreakable connection.”
Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017, returned to office after defeating Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with over 50% of the vote. Tinubu hailed the peaceful election as a testament to Ghana’s democratic maturity.
“This victory reflects the deepening roots of democracy in Africa,” Tinubu said. “It answers skeptics who question whether Africa can sustain democratic and productive governance. Ghana has resoundingly provided that answer.”
Tinubu praised Mahama as a leader of vision and dedication. “He loves his nation and its people deeply. He believes in Ghana’s mission and its fulfillment. No one can ask for more from a leader,” he said.
The Nigerian president concluded by wishing Mahama a successful tenure, expressing optimism for progress in Ghana and the West African region.
