#Wike Pledges Tough Action Against Vandals, Applauds Police and Nigerians

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has pledged that individuals apprehended for allegedly removing sewage manhole covers on Abuja highways will face the full weight of the law to deter similar acts.

Wike emphasized that the government will also track down and prosecute buyers and users of vandalized manhole covers and other public infrastructure. He described such acts as economic sabotage and a threat to public safety.

Arrests and Recoveries

In a statement on Monday, the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, revealed that security agencies had arrested over 50 suspects for vandalism and theft of manhole covers in the FCT. Additionally, 25 stolen manhole covers were recovered, underscoring the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s (FCTA) zero-tolerance policy for criminal activities, especially those targeting public amenities.

Commendations for Security Agencies and Citizens

Wike lauded the security agencies for their swift and decisive actions, describing their collaborative efforts as “fantastic.” He assured FCT residents of the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

The Minister also praised Nigerians for their patriotism in condemning the vandalism, urging citizens to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting public infrastructure. “Safeguarding public amenities is primarily the responsibility of Nigerians, who are the direct beneficiaries of these facilities,” he stated.

Call for Positive Use of Social Media

Highlighting the role of social media in bringing the manhole theft issue to light, Wike encouraged Nigerians to use online platforms constructively. He promised that the government would respond swiftly to such public concerns.

“Those stealing and purchasing public amenities are Nigerians who live among us. It’s vital for patriotic citizens to expose them even before they carry out their destructive acts,” he added.

Wike reaffirmed the FCTA’s dedication to tackling vandalism and protecting public infrastructure, calling on residents to collaborate with authorities to create a safer and more secure environment.
