2027: Tinubu Will Defeat Kwankwaso in Kano, Says Jibrin

A member of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will defeat former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso in Kano during the 2027 presidential election.

Jibrin made the prediction while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the political dynamics expected to shape the contest in Kano.

The lawmaker, who previously worked closely with Kwankwaso but is now a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said his familiarity with the former governor’s political structure would help the ruling party counter his influence.

According to Jibrin, the Kwankwasiyya movement remains a significant force in Kano, and it would be wrong to dismiss Kwankwaso’s popularity in the state.

He said the election would be difficult, but maintained that the APC understands Kwankwaso’s political strategies, strengths and weaknesses.

Jibrin identified Kwankwaso’s position on the 2027 ballot as one of the factors that could favour Tinubu. He noted that Kwankwaso is no longer running for president but is contesting as a running mate to Peter Obi.

“There is a difference between Kwankwaso being on the ballot as a presidential candidate and being on the ballot as a running mate,” Jibrin said.

He argued that the political calculations in Kano could have been different if Kwankwaso were contesting directly for the presidency.

“If Kwankwaso were on the ballot as a presidential candidate, the dynamics in Kano might be different, but he is not the presidential candidate,” he added.

Jibrin also addressed his decision to now oppose his former political associate.

He acknowledged Kwankwaso’s role in his political development and said he remained appreciative of the support he received from the former governor.

The lawmaker stressed that their current political differences should not be interpreted as personal hostility, saying he would continue to respect Kwankwaso despite belonging to a different political camp.

Jibrin also noted that politicians frequently change parties and political alliances, adding that Kwankwaso himself had moved between political platforms.

Tinubu is seeking another term under the APC, while Kwankwaso is now running as Peter Obi’s running mate on the Nigeria Democratic Congress ticket.

The 2027 contest is expected to produce a major political battle in Kano, where Kwankwaso retains a strong support base and Tinubu’s camp is seeking to expand its influence ahead of the election.
