Wellington College International expands to Nigeria, set to open Lagos campus in 2027
Wellington College International has extended its educational network to Nigeria with the launch of a new school in Lagos, bringing its long-standing British educational tradition to the country.
The new campus, located in Alaro City, is expected to welcome its first students in September 2027. The school will accommodate up to 1,500 students between the ages of three and 18, covering early years, primary education and senior school through A Level.
Speaking at the opening of the school’s Welcome Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, the founding Headmaster, Christine Haslett, said the institution would blend the British curriculum with Nigerian culture while preparing students to operate confidently in an increasingly globalised world.
The Welcome Centre will serve as an information and engagement point for prospective parents and students ahead of the school’s full opening.
Haslett explained that the Lagos campus would complement, rather than compete with, existing schools in the city. She also highlighted its connection to the wider Wellington College International network, which comprises 13 schools and about 13,000 students worldwide.
Through the network, students in Lagos are expected to interact with peers from countries including India, China and Indonesia, giving them opportunities to develop international perspectives and relationships.
The school will also place strong emphasis on character development. Haslett identified respect, responsibility, courage, integrity and kindness as five core values that would be embedded throughout students’ academic and extracurricular experiences.

The institution’s Director of Pastoral Care, Adam Shaw, said the Lagos school would draw from Wellington College’s history while adopting modern approaches to education. He described the Nigerian expansion as an opportunity for the institution to engage with a new culture and continent.
Representing the Lagos State Government, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, welcomed the development, saying the establishment of the school reflected growing confidence in Lagos as a destination for high-quality and globally relevant education.
She said the state government particularly welcomed the school’s focus on academic excellence, character, creativity and the overall development of young people.
