2027: TINUBU’S EX-MINISTERS FACE TOUGH BATTLES IN STATES

The recent wave of resignations by top officials in President Bola Tinubu’s administration is already reshaping the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, especially in key states like Kano, Abia, Bauchi, Gombe, Kebbi, and Adamawa.

Several ministers stepped down at the end of March to pursue their ambitions. Among them are Labour Minister Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, aiming for a return to the National Assembly in Abia; Transportation Minister Sa’idu Alkali, who is eyeing the Kano governorship; Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, now in the Bauchi race; and Yusuf Sununu, Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, also preparing for a political comeback in Kebbi.

Their exits have opened up new alignments and rivalries, with some choosing to run under opposition parties, making the contests even more unpredictable.

In Bauchi, Tuggar’s entry into the governorship race has intensified competition within the APC. The state is already crowded with strong contenders, including Bala Wunti and Senator Umar Shehu Buba. Meanwhile, Governor Bala Mohammed is yet to decide his next political move or even which party to align with, creating further uncertainty around the race.

In Gombe, Alkali’s ambition could put pressure on Governor Inuwa Yahaya, who is believed to have preferred successors. Whether the governor sticks with his choices or bows to influence from Abuja remains to be seen.

Kano presents another interesting battle. Former Deputy Governor Nasiru Gawuna has left his federal appointment and the APC to contest under the ADC, posing a challenge to Governor Abba Yusuf. Despite Yusuf’s control of state resources, the influence of Rabiu Kwankwaso and his political structure still looms large, making the outcome far from predictable.

In Abia, Onyejeocha’s return sets up a tough contest against the incumbent, Amobi Ogah. While she brings experience, strong networks, and a solid political base, Ogah has built his own support through visible projects and grassroots engagement, making it a highly competitive race.

Over in Adamawa, aspirants like Abdulrazak Namdas and Ahmed Aminu may have to contend with the influence of Governor Umaru Fintiri, whose backing could determine who eventually emerges as a leading candidate.

Across these states, one thing is clear: the 2027 elections are already taking shape, and the early moves by these political heavyweights are setting the stage for intense, high-stakes battles.

Amid all this, public reactions to national security comments by top officials have also sparked debate. Some Nigerians argue that calls for leniency toward terrorists are misplaced, insisting that justice and accountability must remain the priority. Others believe compassion has a place, but only when balanced with firm enforcement of the law.

As political realignments continue and tensions build, the coming months are likely to bring even more twists, as alliances shift and ambitions collide.
