At least 36 soldiers and Mobile Police officers were reportedly killed after Boko Haram insurgents launched coordinated attacks on two military formations in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The attacks reportedly occurred around 1 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026, targeting the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi and the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari.
According to reports from military sources, the insurgents stormed both camps almost at the same time, leading to intense gun battles that lasted for several hours.
One of the soldiers who survived the attack said the insurgents overwhelmed parts of the formations during the midnight assault.

“My camp was attacked by Boko Haram. In 27 Task Force Brigade, Buni Gari, three soldiers were killed in action. The attack started around 1 a.m. While they were attacking us, they were also attacking our neighbouring camp,” the soldier said.
He explained that both camps are located in Gujba Local Government Area, the hometown of Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni.
“The two camps attacked are the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi and the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari,” he added.
Another soldier confirmed that the attacks happened almost simultaneously, preventing troops from one camp from reinforcing the other.
“The attack happened in two locations close to each other. We started hearing that Boko Haram was attacking Buniyadi around 1 a.m. We were preparing to move in and support them when our own camp also came under attack,” he said.

According to him, the Buniyadi camp serves as a training centre for soldiers and Mobile Police officers deployed to the North-East.
“Those in Buniyadi are responsible for training soldiers and Mobile Police officers coming to the North-East,” he explained.
The soldier said his formation lost three personnel, while the casualty figure at the training centre was much higher.
“Information we received showed that the training centre suffered more casualties. Seventeen Mobile Police officers who came for training were killed, alongside 10 soldiers undergoing training and six soldiers permanently stationed there,” he said.
The total casualty figure from both attacks currently stands at 36 based on information gathered from military sources.
The latest attacks have once again raised concerns over the security situation in the North-East despite repeated claims by authorities that Boko Haram insurgents have been significantly weakened.
