The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding his resignation or threatening impeachment proceedings by the State House of Assembly.
The ultimatum was announced on Monday morning by the state APC Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, during a press briefing at his private residence in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
APC Accuses Fubara of Disrespecting President Tinubu
Okocha accused Governor Fubara of disrespecting President Bola Tinubu, citing his rejection of a proposed political resolution to the ongoing crisis in the state. He described Fubara’s actions as an insult to the President and warned that the party would not tolerate such behavior from a sitting governor.
“As a political party, we are advising the governor to either resign honorably or face impeachment. He has disrespected Mr. President, and we will not stand by and allow this to happen.” – Chief Tony Okocha
Legal Grounds for Impeachment
The APC chairman also referenced legal backing for the impeachment threat, stating that the Supreme Court had already provided sufficient evidence against the governor, making further investigations by the House of Assembly unnecessary.
“The offences are clear; the Supreme Court has affirmed them. The House of Assembly does not need any further investigation.”
The political crisis in Rivers State has intensified in recent months, with tensions between Governor Fubara and other key political figures, including former Governor Nyesom Wike, now a minister in Tinubu’s cabinet.
