#Tension in Rivers as Sole Administrator Allegedly Plans LG Appointments

Fresh anxiety has gripped Rivers State over reports that the newly appointed Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd), is preparing to appoint caretakers for the state’s 23 local government areas.

Sources suggest that President Bola Tinubu tasked Ibas with establishing a leadership structure at the local government level. However, concerns have been raised that such appointments would violate the Nigerian Constitution and the recent Supreme Court ruling affirming local government autonomy.

A source familiar with the matter lamented that, despite clear legal provisions, Ibas appears set to implement a plan that disregards democratic norms. “If carried out, this move would undermine democracy and defy the Supreme Court’s verdict that only elected officials can govern local governments,” the source stated.

Reports indicate that a list of prospective appointees has already been compiled, allegedly favoring a major political figure in the state. This has heightened fears of political manipulation, with opposition groups reportedly preparing to challenge the decision.

Critics warn that such a move could spark a crisis and set a dangerous precedent for executive overreach. “Nigerians must resist this unconstitutional maneuver, as it threatens grassroots democracy,” the source added.

As tensions rise, the next 24 hours may determine whether the rule of law prevails or if political impunity takes hold in Rivers State.
