EFCC Arrests Aisha Achimugu upon Arrival at Abuja Airport

The operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a prominent business executive and socialite, Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu. The socialite who was declared wanted in March over alleged money laundering was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja upon her arrival from London around around 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

This was disclosed by his lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, SAN. Achimugu’s lawyer had informed the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday that their client had already stated in her court documents that she would visit the EFCC today in connection with its ongoing investigation into an alleged case of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

Ojukwu stated that, in light of what transpired in court on Monday, his client returned based on the undertaking before the court to honor the EFCC’s invitation, but was “arrested” at the airport. “She has immediately gone on a hunger strike. She is a prisoner of conscience,” the senior lawyer alleged, insisting that the development runs contrary to the rule of law.

EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale speaking about the development confirmed that Achimugu was expected to appear at the Commission today in line with court developments. Regarding her arrest at the airport, as asserted by her lawyer, the EFCC spokesman said he would respond in due course.

Reccall that Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered Aisha Achimugu to appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, to answer questions regarding an ongoing investigation. The judge also directed that she must appear before the court on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

According to a statement by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the order was made in a ruling in respect of a suit filed by Achimugu against several law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, the Department of State Services, DSS, the EFCC, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS
