#BREAKING: EFCC Invites Ex-Militant Leader Tompolo Over Alleged Naira Abuse in Viral Video

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially invited former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for questioning over alleged naira abuse and financial misconduct.

According to Sahara Reporters, sources within the commission confirmed that the invitation letter was delivered earlier this week and the EFCC is now awaiting his response. The source noted that the letter is a formal invitation and not an arrest warrant but stressed that the commission expects Tompolo’s full cooperation.

This development follows a wave of public outcry after a viral video surfaced online showing Tompolo celebrating what appeared to be his 54th birthday in April. In the clip, widely circulated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Tompolo is seen dancing while being sprayed with bundles of ₦1,000 notes — an act that contravenes Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits the spraying or mutilation of the naira.

The incident drew sharp criticism of the EFCC, with many Nigerians accusing the agency of selective enforcement. Critics pointed out that celebrities such as Bobrisky, E-Money, Iyabo Ojo, and comedian AY had been arrested or interrogated for similar offences, while Tompolo had seemingly been overlooked — until now.

Amid growing pressure, the EFCC released a statement on Monday confirming that Tompolo would be investigated. “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer,” the agency declared.

The controversy has also reignited debates about equal application of justice and the perceived impunity of politically connected individuals, especially given Tompolo’s ongoing federal security contract for oil pipeline protection in the Niger Delta.
