President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has convened a second meeting of the Council of State, inviting former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and other past leaders to discuss critical national issues.
A statement released on Monday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, through the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, said the meeting will take place on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at the Council Chambers of Aso Villa in Abuja.
The session will adopt a hybrid format, allowing members to participate either in person or virtually. It is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will focus on matters of national importance, especially security and governance. This will be followed by a meeting of the Police Council at 2 p.m.
The Council of State, Nigeria’s constitutional advisory body, provides guidance to the president on national matters, including security, policy direction, and key appointments such as the Inspector-General of Police and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Its membership includes the president, vice president, former presidents and heads of state, former chief justices, state governors, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
This marks the second Council of State meeting under Tinubu’s administration. The first, held on August 13, 2025, saw former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari attend in person, while Generals Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar joined virtually. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo did not attend that session.
The Police Council, which meets immediately afterward, oversees the operations of the Nigeria Police Force and advises the president on policing matters, including appointments and performance evaluations of the Inspector-General of Police.
The SGF emphasized that the high-level meeting reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing pressing national challenges and ensuring the security and safety of citizens.
