ABUJA — The political landscape in Enugu took a dramatic turn on Wednesday as the Enugu South Advocates, one of the most influential political pressure groups in the state, officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection comes in solidarity with Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, signaling a significant realignment in a state long considered a stronghold of the PDP. Analysts say the move could reshape the region’s political dynamics ahead of future elections.
‘We Reflected Deeply Before Moving’ – Edeh
Addressing journalists after the defection, the group’s leader, Hon. Uche Kelvin Edeh, described the decision as one made after deep reflection on the state’s political trajectory and the need to align more closely with the federal government to accelerate development.
“With formidable infrastructure and people-oriented policies, there is no doubt Enugu State is on the path of progress,” Hon. Edeh said.
He explained that the group’s choice was motivated by the visible transformation taking place across the state and the belief that working in synergy with the APC-led federal government would unlock greater development opportunities for Enugu.
‘Governor Mbah Has Proven His Leadership’
Edeh praised Governor Mbah’s leadership, citing his administration’s emphasis on infrastructure development, innovation, and human capital growth.
“Governor Mbah has proven himself to be a leader worthy of commendation,” he said. “His focus on infrastructure and people-centric governance is already yielding positive results.”
He added that the governor’s commitment to youth empowerment and technology aligns with modern global and national economic trends.
“Empowering young people with technology skills is not just visionary — it’s essential in today’s economy,” Edeh emphasized.
Shifting Political Dynamics in Enugu
The group’s defection highlights a growing realignment among political stakeholders and community groups in the South-East, many of whom are seeking to reposition themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Observers believe that the Enugu South Advocates’ decision could further consolidate the APC’s presence in the region, traditionally dominated by the PDP.
For many residents, the development also raises key questions about how the balance of political power in Enugu may shift as the APC gains more ground in the South-East political equation.
