Lagos to Launch Omi Eko Project to Transform Water Transportation

The Lagos State Government will launch the Omi Eko Project on Friday, October 17, 2025, to enhance water transportation across the state. Implemented by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) with €410 million in funding from the Global Gateway Initiative, supported by the European Union, French Development Agency, and European Investment Bank, the project will unfold over six years in phases.

Announced by Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu, via X on October 16, the initiative includes: a fleet of 78 high-capacity electric ferries (50-200 passengers), upgraded and new modern terminals and floating jetties, dredging and channel works for 140 km across 15 routes, digital ticketing and smart terminals for faster boarding, and enhanced safety, regulation, and capacity building under LASWA’s oversight.

The Omi Eko Project aims to revolutionize water transport, improving efficiency and safety for Lagos residents.
