House Committee on Internal Security Chairman Hon. Garba Ibrahim Muhammad has disclosed that terrorists have threatened to bomb the National Assembly Complex.

The lawmaker raised the alarm during a public hearing on Tuesday for a bill to establish a Legislative Security Directorate aimed at strengthening protection for lawmakers, staff, and visitors.

“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly and threats from protesters to lock it up,” Garba stated.
He highlighted growing vulnerabilities, including vehicle theft, vandalism, infiltration by unregistered individuals, and use of fake IDs, warning that unaddressed gaps could halt legislative functions and destabilize democracy.

“If activities are thwarted, there will be no representation, no oversight, no budget, no plenary—ultimately undermining governance and the nation,” he said.

The proposed bill (HB 1632) seeks to create a dedicated security unit with world-class protocols while maintaining public access—a core democratic principle.

Garba urged state assemblies nationwide to adopt similar measures.

The National Assembly, one of Nigeria’s most fortified sites after the Presidential Villa, is guarded by police, DSS, and military personnel.
