UK warns against travel to 21 states in Nigeria over ‘rising insecurity’

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) has warned against travel to 21 Nigerian states due to rising insecurity, violent crime, terrorism, and kidnappings. British citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution, review safety measures, and maintain contingency plans.

Travel is strongly discouraged to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina, and Zamfara because of high threats from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa. Non-essential travel is also advised against in parts of Kaduna, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, and the South-East states of Abia, Anambra, and Imo. Bauchi and Lagos are recommended for essential travel only, with precautions, particularly in high-crime areas and at night.

The advisory highlights violent crime in Abuja, protests that can turn violent, separatist tensions in the South-East, and ongoing militancy in the Niger Delta. The FCDO urges travellers to follow local advice, remain alert, and update safety procedures.Headline news
