###I AM QUALIFIED TO BE DEFENCE MINISTER’: MATAWALLE BREAKS SILENCE AS NIGERIANS CALL FOR HIS RESIGNATION

Ibrahim Maigandi Dan Malikin, Special Adviser on Political Matters to the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has defended his principal against claims that he is unqualified for his ministerial role.

Dan Malikin described the criticisms as “politically motivated” and “entirely fabricated,” insisting that Matawalle possesses the competence, experience, and leadership skills necessary to oversee the Ministry of Defence.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the aide rejected arguments suggesting that the Defence portfolio should only be held by former military personnel. He described such views as being “ignorant of Nigeria’s history.”

He highlighted that civilian leadership in defence is a well-established practice in Nigeria, citing examples of past civilian Defence Ministers, including Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (2003–2007), Mahmud Yayale Ahmed (2007–2008), and Adetokunbo Kayode (2010–2011), all of whom effectively managed the ministry during periods of national crisis.

Dan Malikin also defended Matawalle’s tenure as Governor of Zamfara State, where he combated severe banditry. According to the aide, Matawalle implemented a combination of military operations and dialogue/amnesty initiatives, which significantly reduced crime and were later adopted by neighbouring states like Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, and Sokoto.

He emphasized that insecurity should not be politicized, describing it as a national challenge that requires unity, collaboration, and sincerity of purpose.

Addressing allegations regarding Matawalle’s educational qualifications, Dan Malikin dismissed the claims as false, noting that the Minister met all constitutional requirements and was duly screened and approved by the Senate. He argued that leadership ability and competence are more critical than academic certificates alone.

Dan Malikin accused political opponents of spreading misinformation following Matawalle’s high-profile actions and increasing national visibility. He stressed that clarifications were necessary to prevent “falsehoods capable of misleading unsuspecting Nigerians.”

The remarks come amid calls for President Buhari to relieve Matawalle of his duties following a surge in terrorist and bandit attacks across several states over the past three weeks.
