PDP Leaders Turn to Saraki’s Peace Formula to Heal Party Factions

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have initiated efforts to reconcile the party’s warring factions, reportedly following a peace blueprint proposed by former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

According to party sources, PDP officials aiming to prevent uncertainty ahead of the 2027 elections have reached out to key factional figures—including Chief Nyesom Wike, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and Alhaji Saminu Turaki—urging them to consider withdrawing ongoing court cases and agree on a new date for the party’s national convention.

A source familiar with the reconciliation plan said: “The PDP must revisit Saraki’s suggestion if it wants to restore sanity and survive politically.”

Saraki had previously advised party leaders to resolve internal disputes without resorting to litigation, warning that court battles would only delay progress, deepen factional divides, and play into the hands of political opponents plotting against the party. He recommended that leaders focus on reaching a National Convention, where they could address internal issues, review the party constitution, and chart a way forward.

A Lagos-based PDP chieftain lamented the party’s earlier neglect of Saraki’s counsel. “Leaders ignored his advice, and the matter escalated into court cases and factionalism. Saraki had suggested halting the convention and establishing a caretaker committee to reconcile differences. But the factions went ahead, turning the convention into a futile exercise. Following INEC’s decision, the PDP has become a flock without a shepherd, a ship without a captain,” he said.

The party elder added that the current move reflects a return to Saraki’s strategy. “Leaders should not wait for court rulings. They need to engage directly with one another to resolve disagreements. I am encouraged by this latest peace effort,” he said.
