AFRICAN UNION REJECTS RECOGNITION OF SOMALILAND, REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR SOMALIA’S UNITY

The African Union (AU) has reiterated its firm stance against recognising Somaliland as an independent state, emphasizing its commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, issued the statement on Friday through the AU Information and Communication Directorate, expressing “deep concern” over recent moves related to Somaliland. He warned that any initiative to recognise Somaliland as separate would contravene the AU’s core principles.

Youssouf highlighted that the AU’s position is based on the Constitutive Act of the African Union, particularly the principle of respecting borders inherited at independence. This principle, first established by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1964, was designed to prevent border disputes and promote stability across the continent.

“The Chairperson of the Commission firmly rejects any initiative or action aimed at recognising Somaliland as an independent entity,” the AU statement read, underlining that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Youssouf cautioned that attempts to undermine Somalia’s unity and sovereignty could set a “dangerous precedent,” potentially destabilising peace across Africa. He emphasized that such actions would contradict the fundamental values upon which the African Union was founded.

The AU Commission Chair also reaffirmed the organisation’s support for Somalia’s federal authorities, pledging continued backing for efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions, and promote inclusive governance.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since operated with its own governing institutions. However, it has not been recognised as a sovereign state by the African Union or the wider international community.

The AU’s statement comes amid renewed international debate, following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state on December 22. Israel also announced plans to begin immediate cooperation with Somaliland in the agricultural sector.
