REPS DEFEND DELAY IN PASSAGE OF ELECTORAL AMENDMENT BILL

The House of Representatives has defended the delay in passing the Electoral Amendment Bill, saying the process is focused on harmonising differing views to ensure a credible and widely accepted legal framework.

Spokesman Mr. Akintunde Rotimi explained that the delay is necessary to address gaps identified during the 2023 general elections and to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process. He spoke over the weekend in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State while commissioning road projects at Isaba and Oke-Ayedun, as well as staff quarters at Odo-Oro High School.

Responding to public concern over the bill’s status, Rotimi said the House of Representatives had passed it before its December recess, but the Senate is still reviewing it.

“The reforms are comprehensive and stem from extensive consultations with stakeholders. The Joint House and Senate Committees on Electoral Reforms have held multiple meetings, retreats, and discussions with community leaders, civil society organisations, and other interest groups. We are currently at the harmonisation stage, which will be concluded soon,” he said.

Rotimi, representing Ekiti North Federal Constituency (Ikole/Oye), stressed that the Electoral Amendment Bill 2026 is designed to enhance transparency, credibility, and efficiency in the electoral system, ensuring that Nigerians can vote freely and trust that their votes count.

The lawmaker also highlighted his legislative record, noting that he has sponsored over 40 bills, including the Independent Candidacy Bill, the Whistleblowers’ Bill, and legislation to prevent and redress sexual harassment in educational institutions.

On the constituency projects he commissioned, Rotimi said they reflect the genuine needs of his constituents, adding that lawmakers are committed to delivering tangible benefits to the people they represent.

He further urged Nigerians to support the administration of President Bola Tinubu, stating that such backing would enable the government to fulfil its promises.
