Dr. Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), collapsed on Tuesday evening while attempting to enter his office premises in Abuja and has been admitted to a private hospital in the city for urgent medical treatment.
According to a press statement issued on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, and signed by his media assistant, Emmanuel Umahi Ekwe, Esq., the incident occurred due to complications from an untreated knee injury.

The statement explained that Maina lost balance while climbing a staircase to his office, fell, and hit his head on the stairs.
Medical personnel at the scene provided immediate first aid before he was rushed to a private medical facility in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where he is currently receiving intensive care and remains under close observation.

A preliminary medical assessment by attending doctors indicated that if his condition does not stabilize soon, arrangements for an air ambulance medical evacuation may be considered.
The statement read in part: “Dr. Maina is currently receiving close medical care and remains under observation, while his family and medical team are closely monitoring his progress.”

Maina’s family has appealed to the public for understanding, prayers, and respect for their privacy during this period. Further updates will be provided as his condition evolves.
Background on Maina’s Recent Release
Maina was released from Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja just days before the incident, having served part of an eight-year prison sentence.

In November 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Okon Abang, convicted Maina on a 12-count charge of money laundering brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in October 2019. He had pleaded not guilty to all counts.
The court found that Maina stole over N2 billion belonging to pensioners—“most of whom have died without reaping the fruits of their labour,” according to the judgment.
Justice Abang ruled that Maina concealed his identity as a signatory to accounts opened in two banks by using the names of family members without their knowledge.

He was found guilty on all 12 counts and initially sentenced to a cumulative 61 years in prison, to run concurrently, effective from October 25, 2019 (the date of his arraignment).
Maina appealed the conviction and sentence. In May 2023, the Court of Appeal upheld both the conviction and the eight-year jail term.
His release from Kuje prison followed the completion of the sentence, taking into account time already served.
The family has requested privacy and prayers as medical teams monitor Maina’s recovery. Updates are expected as events unfold.
