Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in Nigeria are now requiring their corporate customers to submit identification details as a mandatory condition for continued electricity supply, in compliance with the Nigeria Tax Act (2025).

Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) has already issued a formal notice to its corporate customers, urging them to provide the required information on or before February 20, 2026, to prevent any disruption in service.

In the public notice, IKEDC explained that the new tax law, which took effect on January 1, 2026, requires all invoices—including electricity bills—to include at least one form of identification detail. Failure to comply means the invoice would be considered invalid under the Act.

The acceptable identification details include:
– Tax Identification Number (TIN)
– Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number
– National Identification Number (NIN)

The notice stated:
“To enable us to comply with this statutory requirement and reflect the information on your January 2026 and subsequent bills, we kindly request that you provide any one of the above details by completing the form below.
“Please note that the deadline for submission is 20th February, 2026.

“In line with the provisions of the Act, any invoice issued without this information is considered invalid. Consequently, failure to provide the required details may prevent us from generating your electricity bill and could lead to the suspension of service after the stated deadline.”

While IKEDC has taken this step publicly, confirmation of similar demands from other DisCos could not be immediately obtained. Efforts to reach Bar. Sunday Oduntan, Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), were unsuccessful.
Corporate customers of IKEDC and potentially other DisCos are advised to submit the required identification details promptly to avoid any interruption in electricity supply or billing issues.
The Nigeria Tax Act (2025) aims to improve tax compliance and transparency across various sectors, including utilities.
