WARD CONGRESS: APC CONSOLIDATES, FINTIRI DEFECTION SPARKS POSTPONEMENT IN ADAMAWA

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday advanced its nationwide ward congresses, consolidating grassroots structures in several states, even as the exercise in Adamawa State was postponed ahead of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s expected defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party. The nationwide congresses are scheduled for February 18, 2026.

While incidents of violence were reported in Ondo State, the exercises in Ogun, Edo, Kwara, Delta, Oyo, Benue, and Kebbi largely proceeded peacefully, mostly by consensus. Sources within the APC said the delay in Adamawa was to accommodate Fintiri and other prospective defectors, ensuring a smooth integration into party structures.

In Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun praised the peaceful conduct of ward congresses across all 20 local government areas. In Ward 3, Iperu, Alhaji Sanni Razaq was elected ward chairman, Yinka Balogun as secretary, and Morouf Okugboye as vice chairman. Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele described the exercise as foundational to the emergence of credible grassroots leaders.

Edo State held congresses across 192 wards on a consensus basis. State Chairman Jarret Tenebe called on newly elected leaders to demonstrate good leadership and mobilise citizens for the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration, aiming to deliver 3.5 million votes for President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

In Kwara State, congresses in 193 wards were conducted peacefully. State Chairman Sunday Fagbemi and Deputy Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Samari praised members for transparency, while screening committee secretary Oche Muhammed confirmed thorough verification of aspirants. Local government leaders also commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s leadership in ensuring a smooth exercise.

Delta State’s congresses were lauded for discipline, maturity, and unity. Secretary Simon Chukwuemeka Atigwe and lawmakers including Ede Dafinone confirmed a peaceful, inclusive process. Former governor Ifeanyi Okowa participated alongside his daughter, voting for consensus candidates. Former National Woman Leader Stella Okotete highlighted the emergence of women in key positions, including vice chairman, welfare officer, treasurer, and assistant youth leader.

Oyo State conducted congresses across 351 wards, with the exercise described as peaceful, transparent, and devoid of protests. State Publicity Secretary Olawale Sadare commended the diligence of congress committees led by Gombi Amos and Nadir Lar.
