DISU DECLARES TOTAL WAR ON POLICE CORRUPTION, IMPUNITY

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has tasked the newly appointed acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and restore public confidence, as the country contends with rising banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities.

The President decorated Disu with his new rank at the State House, Abuja, describing the appointment as coming “at a defining moment for our nation’s security.” Drawing on his experience with Disu in Lagos, Tinubu expressed confidence in his ability to enhance discipline, professionalism, and inter-agency collaboration within the Force.

Tinubu charged the new police chief to “lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level, and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains your highest priority.” He assured Disu of his full support and urged him to draw lessons from outgoing IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure, while consolidating past gains.

Disu, in his response, pledged to enforce zero tolerance for corruption and impunity, emphasising accountability, integrity, and community partnership as central pillars of his leadership. He stated, “The badge is a symbol of public trust. Anyone who treats it otherwise will face the full consequences of our disciplinary processes. This applies at every rank, without exception, including those closest to me.”

The acting IGP outlined three priorities for his tenure:

  1. Professionalism and Modernisation – adopting intelligence-led policing, forensic investigation, digital tools, and evidence-based practices, while improving officer training and equipment.

  2. Accountability and Integrity – enforcing disciplinary measures across all ranks and strengthening internal oversight mechanisms.

  3. Community Partnership – embedding community policing in the Force’s operations and fostering collaboration with the public.

Disu formally assumed duty at the Force Headquarters after the Presidential Villa ceremony, taking his first salute as IGP from members of the Quarter Guard and attending a handover with Egbetokun.

Born on April 13, 1966, on Lagos Island, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. He rose to prominence as Commander of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad, later heading the Intelligence Response Team and serving as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. Under the amended Police Act, his tenure as IGP may extend for four years, potentially until 2030.
