LAGOS GOVT TOLD TO CONTINUE MAKOKO DEMOLITIONS UNDER POWER LINES

The Convener of the Coalition for Good Governance in Lagos, Nelson Ekujumi, has urged the Lagos State Government to continue the ongoing removal of structures built beneath high-tension power lines in Makoko, warning against reversing the exercise.

Ekujumi described the clearance as a critical safety measure aimed at protecting lives and property in the waterfront community, which has long faced serious urban planning and environmental challenges. He noted that Makoko is heavily congested, with many residents living in makeshift wooden buildings over the lagoon, lacking access to basic amenities such as sanitation, potable water, electricity, and effective waste disposal.

Highlighting recurring flooding, fire incidents, and unsafe construction beneath power lines, Ekujumi emphasised that protecting human life must remain a top priority for government authorities. He acknowledged the hardship caused by the demolitions but cautioned against decisions based solely on emotions, warning that ignoring clear safety violations could lead to catastrophic outcomes.

The coalition called for greater transparency, clear communication, and trust-building between government agencies and community members, as well as a coordinated redevelopment strategy that goes beyond demolition to include decent housing, essential infrastructure, and economic support for displaced residents.

Ekujumi also commended the Lagos State House of Assembly for intervening to maintain order and urged the legislature to ensure its committee acts promptly to facilitate long-term urban renewal in Makoko that balances safety with livelihood protection.

The demolition exercise, carried out after residents failed to meet agreed safety standards, is part of the state government’s efforts to enforce public safety regulations.
