Iran’s foreign minister has assured China that Tehran will do everything possible to protect Chinese citizens and institutions in the country amid ongoing attacks by the US and Israel.

Abbas Araghchi made the assurance in a Monday call with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, emphasizing that Iran is defending itself against external aggression. Araghchi highlighted that the US launched a military strike on Iran despite progress in negotiations mediated by Oman, which aimed at reaching a peace deal.

Araghchi also expressed hope that China would help prevent further escalation of the conflict in the region. In response, Wang reaffirmed China’s support for Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, urging the US and Israel to halt military actions to prevent the conflict from spreading across the Middle East.

The discussion comes amid China’s continued strategic partnership with Iran, including the 25-year agreement signed in 2021, and Iran’s inclusion in BRICS+ and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. Analysts note that China remains a critical economic partner for Iran, with more than 80 percent of Iran’s exported oil in 2025 going to China, representing a significant portion of China’s seaborne oil imports.
