President Bola Tinubu has extended congratulations to Romuald Wadagni following his victory in the Republic of Benin’s presidential election held on April 12.
In a statement released through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Wadagni’s win as a clear expression of the confidence the people of Benin have in his leadership and track record.

Wadagni, who previously served as Benin’s Minister of Finance, reportedly secured a landslide victory with about 94 percent of the votes, according to provisional results announced by the country’s electoral commission. His main opponent, Paul Hounkpe, conceded defeat before the official final announcement and called for respect for democratic values.
In a personal message to the president-elect, Tinubu said the outcome reflects the trust citizens have placed in Wadagni’s vision and his experience in public service.

He also praised the peaceful conduct of the election, noting that it demonstrated the strength of democratic institutions and the commitment of the Beninese people to stability and order.
Tinubu highlighted the strong historical ties between Nigeria and Benin, expressing hope for deeper cooperation under the new administration. He noted that both countries share longstanding cultural, political, and economic relations within the West African sub-region.

The Nigerian leader further expressed optimism about strengthened collaboration in areas such as regional security, economic growth, and development across ECOWAS and the African Union.

He wished Wadagni success as he prepares to assume office and assured him of Nigeria’s continued support.
The election, which recorded a voter turnout of about 58.75 percent, was largely peaceful, with regional observers commending the process despite minor irregularities.
