POWER MINISTER-DESIGNATE CLARIFIES PROMISE ON FIXING NIGERIA’S GRID IN THREE MONTHS

The camp of Nigeria’s Minister-designate for Power, Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has dismissed reports claiming he promised to fix the country’s national electricity grid within three months, describing the claims as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, Tegbe clarified that no such timeline was given during his Senate screening held on May 6, 2026.

According to the statement, the minister-designate explained that reforms in the power sector require technical assessments and broad consultations with key stakeholders before clear timelines can be established.

He said earlier reports suggesting a three-month fix for the national grid were a misrepresentation of his comments.

The statement added that while Tegbe expects initial stabilisation efforts within his first 100 days in office, comprehensive reforms in the sector would take longer to implement.

He reportedly noted that structural challenges such as gas supply issues, metering gaps, operational inefficiencies, and sector financing could require up to one year or more to address meaningfully.

Tegbe also assured lawmakers that Nigerians would begin to see visible improvements in electricity supply if the planned reforms are properly implemented.

He pledged to stabilise the national grid, modernise infrastructure, improve sector regulation, and strengthen accountability across the electricity value chain.

On tariff concerns, he reportedly assured that vulnerable households would be protected while balancing affordability with long-term sector sustainability and investor confidence.

The statement further stressed that Tegbe values media engagement and encouraged journalists to verify information to avoid the spread of misinformation.

It also highlighted ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, including frequent grid collapses, weak transmission systems, low generation capacity, and funding constraints.

The clarification comes amid growing public expectations that the administration of President Bola Tinubu will deliver lasting reforms to Nigeria’s electricity sector.
