A gunman has opened fire close to the White House in the United States for the second time within a month, triggering a major security response in Washington, D.C.
The incident happened shortly after 6:00 pm local time when the suspect allegedly pulled a firearm from a bag and began shooting near the heavily secured presidential compound.
Security forces, including police officers, federal agents, and National Guard personnel, quickly cordoned off surrounding streets as panic spread across the area.
An AFP correspondent reported that parts of downtown Washington were shut down as heavily armed officers responded to the scene.
US media reports identified the suspect as a 21-year-old man from Maryland, who was believed to have a history of mental health challenges and prior contact with federal security officials.
Officials from the United States Secret Service confirmed that agents returned fire, fatally shooting the suspect during the exchange. One bystander was also injured in the incident, though no officers were harmed.
At the time of the shooting, the US President Donald Trump was inside the White House and was not injured. He was reportedly holding meetings related to diplomatic discussions with Iran when the attack occurred.
In a statement, authorities confirmed that the area was secured immediately and investigations are ongoing.
Trump later praised the swift response of security personnel, thanking them for their professionalism and quick action during the emergency.
The latest shooting comes just a month after another security breach near the White House, raising fresh concerns about safety measures around the presidential residence and prompting renewed calls for a review of security protocols.
