Lagos Govt Pays ₦8bn to Retirees, Expands Welfare for Workers and Pensioners
The Lagos State Government has disbursed about ₦8 billion to retirees under both the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and the Defined Benefit Scheme, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen workers’ welfare and improve pension administration in the state.
The Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, made this known during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing marking the seventh year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.
Agoro said the payment reflects the government’s continued commitment to the welfare of both serving and retired public servants, noting that the public service remains central to governance and development in Lagos State.
He praised workers across the state for their dedication and professionalism in sustaining efficient service delivery.
According to him, the Office of the Head of Service recorded major achievements during the review period in areas such as staff welfare, pension management, housing support, workforce development, and public sector reforms.

Agoro disclosed that 4,837 newly recruited officers were captured in the state’s Soft Suite database and deployed across various Ministries, Departments and Agencies, while 38 political appointees were also integrated into the system.
He added that 185 newly recruited and converted administrative and human resource officers were taken on familiarisation tours of key ministries to improve their understanding of public service operations.
The Head of Service also revealed that Governor Sanwo-Olu approved the appointment of 25 substantive directors as Permanent Secretaries and Tutors-General in the state civil service.
He noted that the government issued 84 service-wide circulars on policy guidelines and administrative matters within the period under review.
On welfare, Agoro said the state implemented a ₦50,000 palliative for public servants in May 2026 and approved a ₦32,000 monthly pension increase for retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme.
He also highlighted the annual health screening programme tagged “Public Servants, Know Your Numbers,” aimed at promoting early detection of health issues among workers.
Agoro said the 16th edition of the Long Service Merit Award honoured 750 public servants who had spent at least 30 years in service, including six Permanent Secretaries and 744 other officers.
He added that 177 outstanding officers received awards and cash rewards during the Public Service Week celebration, while five senior officers were gifted brand-new cars. Five junior officers also received ₦5 million each through a transparent selection process, alongside additional cash rewards approved by the governor.
The Head of Service further disclosed that 17 retired Permanent Secretaries were honoured during the 2025 Pens Down Ceremony for their contributions to the state.
He also said the government continues to support retirees through quarterly training, health checks, skills acquisition programmes, and engagement sessions to help them adjust to life after service.
On housing, he revealed that the Staff Housing and Loans Board disbursed about ₦1.59 billion in housing loans to over 2,000 beneficiaries, while a ₦1 billion annual car refurbishment loan scheme was also approved for public servants.
