OBY EZEKWESILI REACTS TO AISHA YESUFU’S FAILED SENATE AMBITION, CALLS FOR DEMOCRATIC REFLECTION

Ezekwesili Faults NDC Primary, Warns Opposition Party Must Uphold Internal Democracy

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has criticised alleged irregularities in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial primary for the Federal Capital Territory, saying the controversy exposes serious gaps in the party’s internal democratic process.

Ezekwesili said any political party that hopes to present itself as a credible alternative to Nigerians must first demonstrate transparency and fairness within its own structure.

She made the remarks in a Facebook post while reacting to reports surrounding activist Aisha Yesufu’s unsuccessful bid for the party’s Senate ticket, where she alleged that the primary election was manipulated in favour of another aspirant.

According to Ezekwesili, the situation raises concerns about the party’s commitment to democratic values.

“It is therefore baffling that the NDC leadership failed to guarantee a transparent and credible internal process. Political parties are the gatekeepers of democracy. When they fail to practice democracy internally, that becomes a red flag, and I hope your party, NDC, takes the right turns necessary to reclaim that ground,” she wrote.

She added that Nigerians are closely watching political parties that claim to represent change, stressing that such parties must reflect the same values they promote publicly.

“Nigerians yearning for a new political culture are watching, and parties that claim to champion democratic renewal must embody the values they proclaim,” she said.

The NDC primary, held on Friday, produced Amanda Pam as the party’s candidate for the FCT Senate seat, after she defeated Aisha Yesufu in the contest.

Yesufu, who recently joined the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alleged that the process was flawed, pointing to postponements and last-minute changes of venue as signs of manipulation.

However, she later stated that she would not challenge the outcome, saying she preferred to reflect on the experience rather than pursue a formal petition.

Reacting further, Ezekwesili urged Yesufu not to be discouraged, describing her participation as a meaningful step in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

She noted that the bigger issue goes beyond individual contests, stressing that Nigeria’s political system must open space for credible and competent citizens.

“The lesson here is bigger than you, Aisha. It is about whether Nigeria is ready to open political pathways for ethical, competent and capable citizens. Until that answer becomes ‘yes,’ our democracy will continue to recycle mediocrity while excluding excellence,” she wrote.

Ezekwesili also praised Yesufu’s courage in contesting, saying her decision to participate in active politics had inspired many Nigerians, regardless of the outcome.

“Nigeria will yet be grateful that you chose not only to speak as a citizen, but to step forward and offer yourself for public service. Your journey has only just begun. We are many that are cheering you on,” she added.
