HERTFORDSHIRE INVENTION HELPS POWER NIGERIAN HOMES

A solar-powered energy device designed through a collaboration between researchers at the University of Hertfordshire and a Nigerian manufacturing company is helping improve access to electricity in rural communities across Nigeria.

Known as the Powerbox SE, the compact energy system was developed to provide an affordable and sustainable alternative for households and small businesses that remain disconnected from the national power grid.

The project is led by Professor Hafiz Alaka, who said the innovation was inspired by his experience growing up in Nigeria, where many communities continue to face unreliable electricity supply. He explained that the device was created to deliver a practical and low-cost clean energy solution using locally sourced components.

Powered entirely by solar energy, the Powerbox SE can generate approximately 1,200 watt-hours of electricity daily, supplying enough power for essential appliances such as lighting, fans, laptops, washing machines, and other household equipment without recurring fuel or electricity costs.

The technology has already been deployed in parts of Kaduna State, where dozens of units are supporting families, schools, and small businesses with reliable electricity.

Residents say the device has significantly improved their daily lives. Business owners can now operate after sunset, reducing dependence on fuel-powered generators, while students have more time to study in the evenings due to improved lighting.

Educators in rural communities also say the technology is helping strengthen learning by providing a dependable power source that keeps schools and local communities connected.

Professor Alaka believes the project has the potential to reach millions of people who still lack reliable electricity, noting that increased investment could accelerate access to clean and affordable energy across underserved communities.
