IPOB CLAIMS LEADERSHIP TRANSITION, SAYS NOTIFICATIONS SENT TO US, UK AND OTHER FOREIGN MISSIONS

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reportedly notified dozens of countries about a change in the leadership of its highest administrative body, the Directorate of State (DOS).

According to information released by the group, notification letters were sent to 72 countries announcing the dissolution of the third Directorate of State, previously led by Mazi Chika Edoziem, and the inauguration of a fourth administration headed by Mazi Chris Nwaogu, who is based in the United States.

The group said several diplomatic missions in Abuja, including those representing Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, Burkina Faso, China, Kuwait and Indonesia, have acknowledged receipt of the correspondence.

The letters, dated June 24, 2026, were reportedly issued from the Sokoto Correctional Centre, where IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu is serving a life sentence following his conviction on terrorism-related charges.

Signed by Kanu in his capacity as the group’s Supreme Leader, the letters stated that the leadership transition was carried out in accordance with the provisions of IPOB’s Code of Conduct, which the organisation describes as its governing framework.

The correspondence explained that, under the group’s internal rules, the authority to appoint, suspend or replace members of the Directorate of State rests solely with the Office of the Supreme Leader.

It further noted that the previous administration headed by Chika Edoziem was appointed in 2017 while Kanu was being held in Kuje Correctional Centre, while the newly constituted leadership was appointed during his current incarceration in Sokoto.

Sources within the organisation said the acknowledgements from various embassies demonstrate that the leadership change has been formally communicated to multiple governments, including countries represented on the United Nations Security Council.

The development comes after internal disagreements within the group, which culminated in the removal of members of the previous Directorate of State administration. IPOB maintains that the newly inaugurated leadership is fully constituted and has assumed its responsibilities.
