United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership in addressing terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, with particular attention to protecting communities affected by violent attacks.
The commendation was contained in a letter dated July 6, 2026, in which Trump praised Tinubu’s efforts to confront the country’s security challenges and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
In the letter, Trump described Tinubu’s actions as decisive and expressed confidence in the growing partnership between both nations. He noted that the United States remains committed to working with Nigeria to strengthen security and promote stability.
Trump also emphasized the importance of the US-Nigeria relationship at a time when security threats continue to affect West Africa. He said the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap has provided a strong framework for joint efforts against terrorism.
The US President highlighted the deployment of American Special Operations Forces to assist the Nigerian military with advanced training, intelligence, and operational support aimed at improving the country’s ability to combat terrorist groups and protect civilians.
Nigeria and the United States have also expanded their security collaboration through a Joint Working Group led by the National Security Advisers of both countries. The initiative focuses on intelligence sharing, military training, and coordinated operations against extremist groups.
One of the major outcomes of the partnership was a joint operation carried out on May 16 against ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad region, which reportedly led to the elimination of senior terrorist leader Abubakar Al-Minoki and several of his associates.
The strengthened cooperation follows recent diplomatic engagements, including a visit to Abuja by the US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, who reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to expanding collaboration with Nigeria in security and other strategic sectors.
